    What is 10 karat gold?

10 karat gold is the minimum fineness that can be marketed as "gold" in the United States. It contains 41.7% pure gold, so every 10 grams of 10k jewelry holds just over 4 grams of fine gold. It is popular because it is cheap, tough and keeps a strong yellow colour.

10k is widely used for US class rings, men's chains, budget engagement rings, earrings and fashion jewelry. It is harder than 14k and 18k, so it resists dents and scratches, which is why school and sports rings are often 10k.

How the 10k price per gram is calculated

World gold markets quote a single spot price for pure (24k) gold per troy ounce. One troy ounce is 31.1035 grams, so the price of one gram of pure gold is the spot price divided by 31.1035. 10k gold is 417/1000 pure, so its price per gram is that figure multiplied by 0.417.

Example: a 10 gram 10k chain contains 4.17 g of pure gold. At today's price its melt value is about —. A buyer paying 85% of melt value would offer roughly —.

    Hallmarks and testing

Stamps are "10K", "10KT" or "417". Be careful with "10KP" (plumb) versus "10KGP" or "10K GF" — GP means gold plated and GF means gold filled, and both have almost no melt value.

    Selling 10k gold: tips

Pawn shops and online refiners usually pay 70–85% of melt value for 10k. Because the gold content is low, a few cents per gram of difference in the payout percentage matters little — focus on accurate weighing.

    • Class rings often contain a synthetic stone and a heavy shank. Ask the buyer whether they weigh with or without the stone; removing it can change the gold weight by 1–3 grams.
    • Get at least two quotes and ask each buyer for the payout as a percentage of melt value.
    • Sort your items by karat before visiting a buyer — mixed lots are often priced at the lowest karat.
    • Check the live price on this page on the day you sell; gold can move 1–2% in a single session.
