What is 14 karat gold?
14 karat gold is the most popular jewelry alloy in the United States and much of Europe. It is 58.5% pure gold (the "585" stamp), striking a balance between colour, durability and price. If you are selling a box of mixed old jewelry, a large share of it is probably 14k.
Engagement rings, wedding bands, tennis bracelets, chains, earrings and watch cases are routinely made in 14k. It comes in yellow, white (alloyed with nickel or palladium and usually rhodium plated) and rose (extra copper) colours, all with the same gold content.
How the 14k price per gram is calculated
World gold markets quote a single spot price for pure (24k) gold per troy ounce. One troy ounce is 31.1035 grams, so the price of one gram of pure gold is the spot price divided by 31.1035. 14k gold is 585/1000 pure, so its price per gram is that figure multiplied by 0.585.
Example: a 10 gram 14k chain contains 5.85 g of pure gold. At today's price its melt value is about —. A buyer paying 85% of melt value would offer roughly —.
Hallmarks and testing
Stamps are "14K", "14KT", "585" or sometimes "583" on older American pieces (58.3%). Treat 583 as slightly lower purity when you calculate.
Selling 14k gold: tips
14k is easy to refine and buyers compete for it, so 80–90% of melt value is a fair target for larger lots. Online mail-in refiners often pay more than local shops for chains and bracelets.
- White 14k gold has the same gold content as yellow 14k — the colour does not lower the melt value, even if the rhodium plating is worn.
- Get at least two quotes and ask each buyer for the payout as a percentage of melt value.
- Sort your items by karat before visiting a buyer — mixed lots are often priced at the lowest karat.
- Check the live price on this page on the day you sell; gold can move 1–2% in a single session.
