What is 9 karat gold?
9 karat gold is the lowest purity that can legally be sold as gold in the United Kingdom, Ireland and several Commonwealth countries. Only 37.5% of the weight is pure gold, which makes 9k the most affordable gold alloy on the market and also the one where the gap between the shop price and the melt value is widest.
You will find 9k in budget wedding bands, signet rings, chains, charm bracelets and many pieces sold by UK high-street jewellers. The high share of copper and silver makes it hard and scratch-resistant, so it holds detailed engraving well and survives daily wear.
How the 9k price per gram is calculated
World gold markets quote a single spot price for pure (24k) gold per troy ounce. One troy ounce is 31.1035 grams, so the price of one gram of pure gold is the spot price divided by 31.1035. 9k gold is 375/1000 pure, so its price per gram is that figure multiplied by 0.375.
Example: a 10 gram 9k chain contains 3.75 g of pure gold. At today's price its melt value is about —. A buyer paying 85% of melt value would offer roughly —.
Hallmarks and testing
Look for the stamp "375" or "9ct". UK pieces carry an assay-office mark next to the fineness number. A plain "9k" stamp without an assay mark can be genuine but should be acid- or XRF-tested before you sell.
Selling 9k gold: tips
Because 9k contains so little gold, refiners charge a relatively high share of the value to separate it. Expect offers of about 70–85% of melt value on small lots.
- Weigh 9k items without stones, springs or steel clasps. A heavy steel bolt ring can add a gram that is worth nothing.
- Get at least two quotes and ask each buyer for the payout as a percentage of melt value.
- Sort your items by karat before visiting a buyer — mixed lots are often priced at the lowest karat.
- Check the live price on this page on the day you sell; gold can move 1–2% in a single session.
