What is 18 karat gold?
18 karat gold is three-quarters pure gold, the classic fine-jewelry standard in France, Italy, Switzerland and much of Asia. Its rich colour and high gold content make it the preferred alloy for luxury brands and high-end watches.
Designer rings, Italian chains, luxury watch cases and bracelets, and fine bridal jewelry. It is softer than 14k, so 18k rings show wear faster but keep more resale value per gram.
How the 18k price per gram is calculated
World gold markets quote a single spot price for pure (24k) gold per troy ounce. One troy ounce is 31.1035 grams, so the price of one gram of pure gold is the spot price divided by 31.1035. 18k gold is 750/1000 pure, so its price per gram is that figure multiplied by 0.75.

With 75% gold content, 18k earns strong offers: 85–92% of melt value is common. Branded watches and signed designer pieces are usually worth far more sold whole than melted.
- Never sell an 18k branded watch by weight before checking its resale price as a watch — the movement and brand often exceed the gold value.
- Get at least two quotes and ask each buyer for the payout as a percentage of melt value.
- Sort your items by karat before visiting a buyer — mixed lots are often priced at the lowest karat.

What does the 750 stamp mean?
