    What is 24 karat gold?

24 karat gold is fine gold, 99.9% pure or better (999 or 9999 fineness). It is the reference point for every other karat: the spot price per troy ounce quoted on world markets is the price of 24k gold.

Investment bars, bullion coins such as the Maple Leaf, Philharmonic and Krugerrand-style fine coins, Chinese and Thai chuk kam jewelry, and electronics. It is too soft for most everyday Western jewelry.

How the 24k price per gram is calculated

World gold markets quote a single spot price for pure (24k) gold per troy ounce. One troy ounce is 31.1035 grams, so the price of one gram of pure gold is the spot price divided by 31.1035. 24k gold is 999/1000 pure, so its price per gram is that figure multiplied by 0.999.

Example: a 10 gram 24k chain contains 9.99 g of pure gold. At today's price its melt value is about —. A buyer paying 85% of melt value would offer roughly —.

    Selling 24k gold: tips

Bullion bars and coins sell close to spot — typically 97–99% of the melt value — because no refining is needed. 24k jewelry may get slightly less.

    • Keep the original assay card or certificate with bars; it makes resale faster and can raise the offer.
    • Get at least two quotes and ask each buyer for the payout as a percentage of melt value.
    • Sort your items by karat before visiting a buyer — mixed lots are often priced at the lowest karat.
    • Check the live price on this page on the day you sell; gold can move 1–2% in a single session.
