What is a Tael (Taiwan)? Gold weight, conversions and local use
Definition. The Taiwanese tael is 37.5 grams, a metric rounding of the old Chinese tael, and the standard unit in Taiwanese gold shops. Locally it is written 台兩. One tael (taiwan) equals 37.5 grams, or 1.20565 troy ounces, which at today's gold spot price works out to — CAD.
Where it is used. Bank of Taiwan gold passbooks quote per gram, but jewellery and gift bars — especially at weddings and births — are counted in taels. The unit is the trading standard in Taiwan.
Pricing conventions. Taiwanese shops usually price 9999 gold per tael with a fixed workmanship charge and publish a separate buy-back rate that is a few percent below the selling rate. Gold is the metal most often traded in these traditional units, because jewellery and savings demand kept the old weights alive long after industry went metric.
Good to know. One Taiwanese tael is divided into ten 錢 (qian) of 3.75 g each, which is the same weight as the Japanese momme and the Korean don.

Buying Gold in Canada: local market, taxes and premiums
At the live price shown above per tael (taiwan), the price you see here is the international XAU spot price converted into Canadian Dollar. Physical buyers in Canada pay that reference plus a premium, and local trading is concentrated around Toronto and the Royal Canadian Mint distribution network. Buyers there generally watch the LBMA price converted at the Bank of Canada daily rate as the day's reference.
Taxes and duties. Bullion of at least 99.5% purity (99.9% for silver) is a zero-rated financial instrument, so no GST or HST applies. Gold is the deepest of the four precious metals markets, so local retail spreads are usually the tightest and buy-back is easiest. That is why the shop price of gold in CAD can sit noticeably above the spot value of the same tael (taiwan) of metal.
How people usually buy. The common routes in Canada are Royal Canadian Mint, bank-linked bullion desks, online dealers and TSX-listed metal trusts. The products most often quoted locally include Gold Maple Leaf, Silver Maple Leaf, RCM 1 kg bars, Maplegram sheets.
Local conventions. The Maple Leaf is struck at 99.99% fineness, one of the purest mass-market bullion coins available. Before you buy, compare the dealer's asking price per tael (taiwan) with the live gold price above, and check the buy-back spread the same dealer offers — that round-trip cost matters more than a small difference in the headline CAD quote.
