What is a Mesghal? Gold weight, conversions and local use
Definition. The mesghal (4.6875 g) is the traditional Persian unit for gold, equal to 4.6875 g or 4.608 g depending on the local standard. Locally it is written مثقال. One mesghal equals 4.6875 grams, or 0.15071 troy ounces, which at today's gold spot price works out to — CNY.
Where it is used. Iranian bazaar dealers quote 17-carat (705) gold per mesghal, and the mesghal rate is published alongside the coin (Bahar Azadi) price. The unit is the trading standard in Iran and parts of the Middle East.
Pricing conventions. Because Iranian jewellery is traditionally 18K sold at a 705 assay, converting a mesghal quote to a world price requires adjusting for purity as well as weight. Gold is the metal most often traded in these traditional units, because jewellery and savings demand kept the old weights alive long after industry went metric.
Good to know. One mesghal equals 5 dirham in the old Persian system; the sooth (soot) subdivides it further for small stones.

Buying Gold in China: local market, taxes and premiums
At the live price shown above per mesghal, the price you see here is the international XAU spot price converted into Chinese Yuan. Physical buyers in China pay that reference plus a premium, and local trading is concentrated around Shanghai, through the Shanghai Gold Exchange. Buyers there generally watch the Shanghai Gold Benchmark Price in yuan per gram as the day's reference.
Taxes and duties. Investment gold traded through the Shanghai Gold Exchange is VAT-exempt, while jewellery carries 13% VAT plus consumption tax. Gold is the deepest of the four precious metals markets, so local retail spreads are usually the tightest and buy-back is easiest. That is why the shop price of gold in CNY can sit noticeably above the spot value of the same mesghal of metal.
How people usually buy. The common routes in China are Shanghai Gold Exchange members, bank gold accumulation plans, Chow Tai Fook and other chains and online platforms. The products most often quoted locally include 50 g and 100 g bars, Panda coins, 999 gold jewellery, SGE Au99.99 contracts.
Local conventions. Mainland buyers price gold per gram and by the metric tael (50 g); the SGE benchmark can trade at a premium or discount to London. Before you buy, compare the dealer's asking price per mesghal with the live gold price above, and check the buy-back spread the same dealer offers — that round-trip cost matters more than a small difference in the headline CNY quote.
