What is a Mesghal? Palladium weight, conversions and local use
Definition. The mesghal (4.6875 g) is the traditional Persian unit for gold, equal to 4.6875 g or 4.608 g depending on the local standard. Locally it is written مثقال. One mesghal equals 4.6875 grams, or 0.15071 troy ounces, which at today's palladium spot price works out to — SGD.
Where it is used. Iranian bazaar dealers quote 17-carat (705) gold per mesghal, and the mesghal rate is published alongside the coin (Bahar Azadi) price. The unit is the trading standard in Iran and parts of the Middle East.
Pricing conventions. Because Iranian jewellery is traditionally 18K sold at a 705 assay, converting a mesghal quote to a world price requires adjusting for purity as well as weight. Palladium is almost entirely an industrial metal, so a retail quote in this unit is a conversion from the ounce price rather than a rate you will see posted in a shop.
Good to know. One mesghal equals 5 dirham in the old Persian system; the sooth (soot) subdivides it further for small stones.

Buying Palladium in Singapore: local market, taxes and premiums
At the live price shown above per mesghal, the price you see here is the international XPD spot price converted into Singapore Dollar. Physical buyers in Singapore pay that reference plus a premium, and local trading is concentrated around Singapore, a bonded storage hub for Asian investors. Buyers there generally watch the LBMA price converted to SGD intraday as the day's reference.
Taxes and duties. Silver, platinum and palladium qualify for the same IPM exemption when they meet the purity standard; jewellery does not. Palladium is dominated by industrial buyers, so retail coins and bars are scarce and premiums move sharply with supply news. That is why the shop price of palladium in SGD can sit noticeably above the spot value of the same mesghal of metal.
How people usually buy. The common routes in Singapore are BullionStar and Silver Bullion, The Safe House and Le Freeport vaults, bank bullion desks and online dealers. The products most often quoted locally include 1 oz coins, 1 kg bars, vault-stored allocated metal, Singapore Merlion coins.
Local conventions. Singapore's IPM scheme and free-trade-zone vaults make it a common jurisdiction for offshore storage of Asian bullion holdings. Before you buy, compare the dealer's asking price per mesghal with the live palladium price above, and check the buy-back spread the same dealer offers — that round-trip cost matters more than a small difference in the headline SGD quote.
