What is a Tola? Platinum weight, conversions and local use
Definition. The tola (11.6638 g) is the traditional South Asian unit for gold and remains the standard quote in Indian and Gulf jewellery shops. Locally it is written तोला. One tola equals 11.6638 grams, or 0.37500 troy ounces, which at today's platinum spot price works out to — AUD.
Where it is used. Ten-tola bars ('TT bars', 116.64 g) are the classic Dubai-to-India trade format, and wedding jewellery is still ordered by the tola. The unit is the trading standard in India, Pakistan, Nepal and the Gulf.
Pricing conventions. Indian shops quote a tola rate for 22K (0.916) rather than pure metal, then add making charges of 8–25%. Gulf shops quote 24K per tola or per gram and charge a smaller fixed making fee. Platinum has almost no traditional-unit retail market: it is quoted per ounce or per gram, and this conversion is mainly used for jewellery weighing and industrial stock.
Good to know. The tola was once the weight of a British India silver rupee, which is why the unit is tied so closely to jewellery and savings culture.

Buying Platinum in Australia: local market, taxes and premiums
At the live price shown above per tola, the price you see here is the international XPT spot price converted into Australian Dollar. Physical buyers in Australia pay that reference plus a premium, and local trading is concentrated around Perth, home of the government-guaranteed Perth Mint. Buyers there generally watch the Perth Mint spot feed in AUD per ounce as the day's reference.
Taxes and duties. Silver must be 99.9% and platinum 99% to be GST-free; anything below those thresholds, including jewellery, attracts 10% GST. Platinum is a much smaller market driven by autocatalyst and jewellery demand, so local availability is patchier and dealer spreads wider. That is why the shop price of platinum in AUD can sit noticeably above the spot value of the same tola of metal.
How people usually buy. The common routes in Australia are Perth Mint depository, ABC Bullion and other national dealers, online dealers and ASX-listed metal ETFs. The products most often quoted locally include Perth Mint Kangaroo, Lunar series coins, 1 kg silver bars, unallocated depository accounts.
Local conventions. The Perth Mint's depository programme lets buyers hold allocated or unallocated metal without taking delivery. Before you buy, compare the dealer's asking price per tola with the live platinum price above, and check the buy-back spread the same dealer offers — that round-trip cost matters more than a small difference in the headline AUD quote.
