What is a Grain? Gold weight, conversions and local use
Definition. The grain (0.0648 g) is the smallest troy unit, one 480th of a troy ounce. One grain equals 0.0648 grams, or 0.00208 troy ounces, which at today's gold spot price works out to — BRL.
Where it is used. Historical coin weights, gold leaf and very small assay samples are still specified in grains. The unit is the trading standard in coin collecting and assaying.
Pricing conventions. No modern bullion product is sold by the grain, but numismatic catalogues use it, so collectors convert grain weights when valuing old coinage. Gold is the metal most often traded in these traditional units, because jewellery and savings demand kept the old weights alive long after industry went metric.
Good to know. The grain was originally the weight of a single barley seed, making it one of the oldest surviving mass units in use.

Buying Gold in Brazil: local market, taxes and premiums
At the live price shown above per grain, the price you see here is the international XAU spot price converted into Brazilian Real. Physical buyers in Brazil pay that reference plus a premium, and local trading is concentrated around São Paulo, with trading routed through authorised financial institutions. Buyers there generally watch the B3 gold contract in reais per gram as the day's reference.
Taxes and duties. Gold bought as a financial asset through an authorised institution is subject to IOF rather than ICMS, and gains are taxed on sale. Gold is the deepest of the four precious metals markets, so local retail spreads are usually the tightest and buy-back is easiest. That is why the shop price of gold in BRL can sit noticeably above the spot value of the same grain of metal.
How people usually buy. The common routes in Brazil are authorised gold DTVMs, bank investment platforms, B3-listed gold contracts and jewellers. The products most often quoted locally include OZ1D B3 contracts, 10 g and 1 oz bars, 18K jewellery.
Local conventions. Brazilian jewellery is typically 18K (750), and gold is legally classed as a financial asset when traded through licensed institutions. Before you buy, compare the dealer's asking price per grain with the live gold price above, and check the buy-back spread the same dealer offers — that round-trip cost matters more than a small difference in the headline BRL quote.
