What is a Grain? Silver weight, conversions and local use
Definition. The grain (0.0648 g) is the smallest troy unit, one 480th of a troy ounce. One grain equals 0.0648 grams, or 0.00208 troy ounces, which at today's silver spot price works out to — BRL.
Where it is used. Historical coin weights, gold leaf and very small assay samples are still specified in grains. The unit is the trading standard in coin collecting and assaying.
Pricing conventions. No modern bullion product is sold by the grain, but numismatic catalogues use it, so collectors convert grain weights when valuing old coinage. Silver is bulkier per unit of value, so quotes in small traditional units are usually a conversion, while real trade happens in kilogram and 1 000 oz bars.
Good to know. The grain was originally the weight of a single barley seed, making it one of the oldest surviving mass units in use.

Buying Silver in Brazil: local market, taxes and premiums
At the live price shown above per grain, the price you see here is the international XAG spot price converted into Brazilian Real. Physical buyers in Brazil pay that reference plus a premium, and local trading is concentrated around São Paulo, with trading routed through authorised financial institutions. Buyers there generally watch the B3 gold contract in reais per gram as the day's reference.
Taxes and duties. Silver, platinum and palladium are treated as ordinary goods and carry state ICMS, so retail spreads are wide. Silver is bulkier and cheaper per unit, so shipping, storage and consumption taxes matter far more to the final price than they do for gold. That is why the shop price of silver in BRL can sit noticeably above the spot value of the same grain of metal.
How people usually buy. The common routes in Brazil are authorised gold DTVMs, bank investment platforms, B3-listed gold contracts and jewellers. The products most often quoted locally include OZ1D B3 contracts, 10 g and 1 oz bars, 18K jewellery.
Local conventions. Brazilian jewellery is typically 18K (750), and gold is legally classed as a financial asset when traded through licensed institutions. Before you buy, compare the dealer's asking price per grain with the live silver price above, and check the buy-back spread the same dealer offers — that round-trip cost matters more than a small difference in the headline BRL quote.
