What is a Momme? Gold weight, conversions and local use
Definition. The momme (3.75 g) is the traditional Japanese unit of mass, best known for pearls but also used for precious metals. Locally it is written 匁. One momme equals 3.75 grams, or 0.12057 troy ounces, which at today's gold spot price works out to — CHF.
Where it is used. Japanese jewellers and pearl dealers quote per momme, and it is the unit behind many antique Japanese silver weights. The unit is the trading standard in Japan.
Pricing conventions. Japanese bullion dealers publish tax-inclusive yen prices per gram, so a momme quote is usually a conversion rather than the headline rate. Gold is the metal most often traded in these traditional units, because jewellery and savings demand kept the old weights alive long after industry went metric.
Good to know. One momme equals one tenth of a Taiwanese tael and matches the Korean don exactly.

Buying Gold in Switzerland: local market, taxes and premiums
At the live price shown above per momme, the price you see here is the international XAU spot price converted into Swiss Franc. Physical buyers in Switzerland pay that reference plus a premium, and local trading is concentrated around Zurich, home to the world's largest gold refineries. Buyers there generally watch the Zurich spot market quoted per kilogram as the day's reference.
Taxes and duties. Investment gold is exempt from Swiss VAT, and there is no capital gains tax on private bullion holdings. Gold is the deepest of the four precious metals markets, so local retail spreads are usually the tightest and buy-back is easiest. That is why the shop price of gold in CHF can sit noticeably above the spot value of the same momme of metal.
How people usually buy. The common routes in Switzerland are UBS and cantonal bank counters, refiner-linked dealers (PAMP, Argor-Heraeus, Valcambi), free-port vault storage and online dealers. The products most often quoted locally include PAMP Suisse 1 oz bars, Valcambi CombiBar, 100 g bars, Vreneli coins.
Local conventions. Around two thirds of the world's gold is refined in Switzerland, so bar branding and assay certificates are unusually important to local buyers. Before you buy, compare the dealer's asking price per momme with the live gold price above, and check the buy-back spread the same dealer offers — that round-trip cost matters more than a small difference in the headline CHF quote.
