What is a Momme? Gold weight, conversions and local use
Definition. The momme (3.75 g) is the traditional Japanese unit of mass, best known for pearls but also used for precious metals. Locally it is written 匁. One momme equals 3.75 grams, or 0.12057 troy ounces, which at today's gold spot price works out to — ZAR.
Where it is used. Japanese jewellers and pearl dealers quote per momme, and it is the unit behind many antique Japanese silver weights. The unit is the trading standard in Japan.
Pricing conventions. Japanese bullion dealers publish tax-inclusive yen prices per gram, so a momme quote is usually a conversion rather than the headline rate. Gold is the metal most often traded in these traditional units, because jewellery and savings demand kept the old weights alive long after industry went metric.
Good to know. One momme equals one tenth of a Taiwanese tael and matches the Korean don exactly.

Buying Gold in South Africa: local market, taxes and premiums
At the live price shown above per momme, the price you see here is the international XAU spot price converted into South African Rand. Physical buyers in South Africa pay that reference plus a premium, and local trading is concentrated around Johannesburg, historically the centre of world gold mining. Buyers there generally watch the Rand Refinery price in rand per ounce as the day's reference.
Taxes and duties. Krugerrands and other bullion carry 15% VAT on the dealer margin structure, and gains are taxable when realised. Gold is the deepest of the four precious metals markets, so local retail spreads are usually the tightest and buy-back is easiest. That is why the shop price of gold in ZAR can sit noticeably above the spot value of the same momme of metal.
How people usually buy. The common routes in South Africa are SA Mint and Rand Refinery distributors, bank bullion desks, coin dealers and JSE-listed metal ETFs. The products most often quoted locally include Krugerrand, Protea and Natura coins, 1 oz platinum coins.
Local conventions. The Krugerrand, struck at 22 carat with one full ounce of fine gold, is the local standard and trades globally. Before you buy, compare the dealer's asking price per momme with the live gold price above, and check the buy-back spread the same dealer offers — that round-trip cost matters more than a small difference in the headline ZAR quote.
