What is a Tola? Gold weight, conversions and local use
Definition. The tola (11.6638 g) is the traditional South Asian unit for gold and remains the standard quote in Indian and Gulf jewellery shops. Locally it is written तोला. One tola equals 11.6638 grams, or 0.37500 troy ounces, which at today's gold spot price works out to — THB.
Where it is used. Ten-tola bars ('TT bars', 116.64 g) are the classic Dubai-to-India trade format, and wedding jewellery is still ordered by the tola. The unit is the trading standard in India, Pakistan, Nepal and the Gulf.
Pricing conventions. Indian shops quote a tola rate for 22K (0.916) rather than pure metal, then add making charges of 8–25%. Gulf shops quote 24K per tola or per gram and charge a smaller fixed making fee. Gold is the metal most often traded in these traditional units, because jewellery and savings demand kept the old weights alive long after industry went metric.
Good to know. The tola was once the weight of a British India silver rupee, which is why the unit is tied so closely to jewellery and savings culture.

Buying Gold in Thailand: local market, taxes and premiums
At the live price shown above per tola, the price you see here is the international XAU spot price converted into Thai Baht. Physical buyers in Thailand pay that reference plus a premium, and local trading is concentrated around Bangkok's Yaowarat (Chinatown) gold shops. Buyers there generally watch the Gold Traders Association buy/sell quote updated many times a day as the day's reference.
Taxes and duties. 96.5% gold ornaments and bars are effectively VAT-free on the metal value; VAT applies only to the workmanship margin. Gold is the deepest of the four precious metals markets, so local retail spreads are usually the tightest and buy-back is easiest. That is why the shop price of gold in THB can sit noticeably above the spot value of the same tola of metal.
How people usually buy. The common routes in Thailand are Yaowarat gold shops, Gold Traders Association members, TFEX gold futures and gold savings plans. The products most often quoted locally include 1 baht ornament gold, 96.5% bars, gold necklaces sold by baht weight.
Local conventions. Thai gold is quoted per baht weight (15.244 g) at 96.5% purity, with buy and sell prices posted publicly by the Gold Traders Association. Before you buy, compare the dealer's asking price per tola with the live gold price above, and check the buy-back spread the same dealer offers — that round-trip cost matters more than a small difference in the headline THB quote.
