What is a Tola? Gold weight, conversions and local use
Definition. The tola (11.6638 g) is the traditional South Asian unit for gold and remains the standard quote in Indian and Gulf jewellery shops. Locally it is written तोला. One tola equals 11.6638 grams, or 0.37500 troy ounces, which at today's gold spot price works out to — SGD.
Where it is used. Ten-tola bars ('TT bars', 116.64 g) are the classic Dubai-to-India trade format, and wedding jewellery is still ordered by the tola. The unit is the trading standard in India, Pakistan, Nepal and the Gulf.
Pricing conventions. Indian shops quote a tola rate for 22K (0.916) rather than pure metal, then add making charges of 8–25%. Gulf shops quote 24K per tola or per gram and charge a smaller fixed making fee. Gold is the metal most often traded in these traditional units, because jewellery and savings demand kept the old weights alive long after industry went metric.
Good to know. The tola was once the weight of a British India silver rupee, which is why the unit is tied so closely to jewellery and savings culture.

Local conventions. Singapore's IPM scheme and free-trade-zone vaults make it a common jurisdiction for offshore storage of Asian bullion holdings. Before you buy, compare the dealer's asking price per tola with the live gold price above, and check the buy-back spread the same dealer offers — that round-trip cost matters more than a small difference in the headline SGD quote.
