What is a Baht? Gold weight, conversions and local use
Definition. The gold baht is 15.244 g of 96.5% pure gold as sold in Thai shops, or 15.16 g when the metal is pure. Locally it is written บาท. One baht equals 15.244 grams, or 0.49011 troy ounces, which at today's gold spot price works out to — TRY.
Where it is used. Thai gold shops sell chains and bars by the baht, and the Gold Traders Association publishes a daily buy and sell rate for exactly this unit. The unit is the trading standard in Thailand.
Pricing conventions. Thai 96.5% jewellery carries a small fixed workmanship charge rather than a percentage premium, which is why Thai gold is unusually easy to resell near its quoted value. Gold is the metal most often traded in these traditional units, because jewellery and savings demand kept the old weights alive long after industry went metric.
Good to know. The weight unit shares its name with the currency but is entirely separate — a 'one baht' chain is a weight, not a price.

Buying Gold in Turkey: local market, taxes and premiums
At the live price shown above per baht, the price you see here is the international XAU spot price converted into Turkish Lira. Physical buyers in Turkey pay that reference plus a premium, and local trading is concentrated around Istanbul's Grand Bazaar and Borsa Istanbul. Buyers there generally watch the Borsa Istanbul gram gold price in lira as the day's reference.
Taxes and duties. Physical investment gold is exempt from Turkish VAT, which is why bullion is a mainstream household savings vehicle. Gold is the deepest of the four precious metals markets, so local retail spreads are usually the tightest and buy-back is easiest. That is why the shop price of gold in TRY can sit noticeably above the spot value of the same baht of metal.
How people usually buy. The common routes in Turkey are Kapalıçarşı jewellers, bank gold accounts, Borsa Istanbul Precious Metals Market and gold-linked deposit products. The products most often quoted locally include Cumhuriyet Altını, Çeyrek (quarter) coins, gram gold bars, 22K bilezik bangles.
Local conventions. Turks buy standardised coins by name - çeyrek, yarım, tam - and 22K bangles, with lira weakness driving persistent physical demand. Before you buy, compare the dealer's asking price per baht with the live gold price above, and check the buy-back spread the same dealer offers — that round-trip cost matters more than a small difference in the headline TRY quote.
