What is a Baht? Gold weight, conversions and local use
Definition. The gold baht is 15.244 g of 96.5% pure gold as sold in Thai shops, or 15.16 g when the metal is pure. Locally it is written บาท. One baht equals 15.244 grams, or 0.49011 troy ounces, which at today's gold spot price works out to — SGD.
Where it is used. Thai gold shops sell chains and bars by the baht, and the Gold Traders Association publishes a daily buy and sell rate for exactly this unit. The unit is the trading standard in Thailand.
Pricing conventions. Thai 96.5% jewellery carries a small fixed workmanship charge rather than a percentage premium, which is why Thai gold is unusually easy to resell near its quoted value. Gold is the metal most often traded in these traditional units, because jewellery and savings demand kept the old weights alive long after industry went metric.
Good to know. The weight unit shares its name with the currency but is entirely separate — a 'one baht' chain is a weight, not a price.

Taxes and duties. Investment Precious Metals meeting purity and form rules are exempt from GST in Singapore. Gold is the deepest of the four precious metals markets, so local retail spreads are usually the tightest and buy-back is easiest. That is why the shop price of gold in SGD can sit noticeably above the spot value of the same baht of metal.
How people usually buy. The common routes in Singapore are BullionStar and Silver Bullion, The Safe House and Le Freeport vaults, bank bullion desks and online dealers. The products most often quoted locally include 1 oz coins, 1 kg bars, vault-stored allocated metal, Singapore Merlion coins.
Local conventions. Singapore's IPM scheme and free-trade-zone vaults make it a common jurisdiction for offshore storage of Asian bullion holdings. Before you buy, compare the dealer's asking price per baht with the live gold price above, and check the buy-back spread the same dealer offers — that round-trip cost matters more than a small difference in the headline SGD quote.
