What is a Tael (Taiwan)? Platinum weight, conversions and local use
Definition. The Taiwanese tael is 37.5 grams, a metric rounding of the old Chinese tael, and the standard unit in Taiwanese gold shops. Locally it is written 台兩. One tael (taiwan) equals 37.5 grams, or 1.20565 troy ounces, which at today's platinum spot price works out to — MXN.
Where it is used. Bank of Taiwan gold passbooks quote per gram, but jewellery and gift bars — especially at weddings and births — are counted in taels. The unit is the trading standard in Taiwan.
Pricing conventions. Taiwanese shops usually price 9999 gold per tael with a fixed workmanship charge and publish a separate buy-back rate that is a few percent below the selling rate. Platinum has almost no traditional-unit retail market: it is quoted per ounce or per gram, and this conversion is mainly used for jewellery weighing and industrial stock.
Good to know. One Taiwanese tael is divided into ten 錢 (qian) of 3.75 g each, which is the same weight as the Japanese momme and the Korean don.

Buying Platinum in Mexico: local market, taxes and premiums
At the live price shown above per tael (taiwan), the price you see here is the international XPT spot price converted into Mexican Peso. Physical buyers in Mexico pay that reference plus a premium, and local trading is concentrated around Mexico City and the Banco de México coin programme. Buyers there generally watch the Banco de México reference price and the peso-dollar rate as the day's reference.
Taxes and duties. Silver bullion is widely available because Mexico is the world's largest silver producer, but tax treatment varies by format and seller. Platinum is a much smaller market driven by autocatalyst and jewellery demand, so local availability is patchier and dealer spreads wider. That is why the shop price of platinum in MXN can sit noticeably above the spot value of the same tael (taiwan) of metal.
How people usually buy. The common routes in Mexico are Banco de México and commercial banks, Casa de Moneda distributors, coin dealers and online dealers. The products most often quoted locally include Centenario 50 pesos, Libertad gold and silver, 1 oz bars.
Local conventions. The 37.5 g Centenario and the Libertad series are the traditional local savings instruments, quoted in pesos per piece. Before you buy, compare the dealer's asking price per tael (taiwan) with the live platinum price above, and check the buy-back spread the same dealer offers — that round-trip cost matters more than a small difference in the headline MXN quote.
