What is a Gram? Platinum weight, conversions and local use
Definition. The gram is the everyday retail unit for precious metals outside the English-speaking wholesale market. One gram equals 1 grams, or 0.03215 troy ounces, which at today's platinum spot price works out to — SGD.
Where it is used. Jewellers, pawn shops and scrap buyers all quote per gram, and small investment bars start at 1 g, 5 g, 10 g, 20 g, 50 g and 100 g. The unit is the trading standard in Europe, Middle East and most retail markets.
Pricing conventions. Premiums rise sharply as gram size falls: a 1 g bar can cost 20–40% over melt value, while a 100 g bar sits within a few percent of spot. Scrap offers are usually a discount to the gram price by karat. Platinum has almost no traditional-unit retail market: it is quoted per ounce or per gram, and this conversion is mainly used for jewellery weighing and industrial stock.
Good to know. Gram pricing is also how most karat calculations are done: multiply the gram price by the purity fraction (for example 0.750 for 18K).

Buying Platinum in Singapore: local market, taxes and premiums
At the live price shown above per gram, the price you see here is the international XPT spot price converted into Singapore Dollar. Physical buyers in Singapore pay that reference plus a premium, and local trading is concentrated around Singapore, a bonded storage hub for Asian investors. Buyers there generally watch the LBMA price converted to SGD intraday as the day's reference.
Taxes and duties. Silver, platinum and palladium qualify for the same IPM exemption when they meet the purity standard; jewellery does not. Platinum is a much smaller market driven by autocatalyst and jewellery demand, so local availability is patchier and dealer spreads wider. That is why the shop price of platinum in SGD can sit noticeably above the spot value of the same gram of metal.
How people usually buy. The common routes in Singapore are BullionStar and Silver Bullion, The Safe House and Le Freeport vaults, bank bullion desks and online dealers. The products most often quoted locally include 1 oz coins, 1 kg bars, vault-stored allocated metal, Singapore Merlion coins.
Local conventions. Singapore's IPM scheme and free-trade-zone vaults make it a common jurisdiction for offshore storage of Asian bullion holdings. Before you buy, compare the dealer's asking price per gram with the live platinum price above, and check the buy-back spread the same dealer offers — that round-trip cost matters more than a small difference in the headline SGD quote.
