What is a Kilogram? Silver weight, conversions and local use
Definition. The kilogram bar is the workhorse of the Asian wholesale market and the deliverable size on the Shanghai Gold Exchange. One kilogram equals 1000 grams, or 32.15075 troy ounces, which at today's silver spot price works out to — HKD.
Where it is used. Refiners, banks and large dealers move metal in 1 kg bars; for silver the standard wholesale unit is a 1 000 oz or 30 kg bar. The unit is the trading standard in wholesale and institutional trade.
Pricing conventions. Kilogram pricing shows the smallest premium of any retail-accessible size, which is why dealers quote it when comparing buy-back offers or valuing an entire holding. Silver is bulkier per unit of value, so quotes in small traditional units are usually a conversion, while real trade happens in kilogram and 1 000 oz bars.
Good to know. A kilogram equals 32.1507 troy ounces — not 32, a difference worth several hundred currency units at today's gold price.

Buying Silver in Hong Kong: local market, taxes and premiums
At the live price shown above per kilogram, the price you see here is the international XAG spot price converted into Hong Kong Dollar. Physical buyers in Hong Kong pay that reference plus a premium, and local trading is concentrated around Hong Kong's Chinese Gold & Silver Exchange Society. Buyers there generally watch the CGSE loco London and loco Hong Kong tael quotes as the day's reference.
Taxes and duties. Silver, platinum and palladium are equally untaxed, which keeps retail premiums among the lowest in Asia. Silver is bulkier and cheaper per unit, so shipping, storage and consumption taxes matter far more to the final price than they do for gold. That is why the shop price of silver in HKD can sit noticeably above the spot value of the same kilogram of metal.
How people usually buy. The common routes in Hong Kong are CGSE member dealers, Chow Sang Sang and other jewellers, bank paper gold accounts and vault storage providers. The products most often quoted locally include tael bars (37.429 g), 999.9 gold bars, Kilobars, 999 gold jewellery.
Local conventions. The Hong Kong tael of 37.429 g is the classic local trading weight, and 99.99 'chuk kam' gold jewellery is bought largely by weight. Before you buy, compare the dealer's asking price per kilogram with the live silver price above, and check the buy-back spread the same dealer offers — that round-trip cost matters more than a small difference in the headline HKD quote.
