What is a Momme? Silver weight, conversions and local use
Definition. The momme (3.75 g) is the traditional Japanese unit of mass, best known for pearls but also used for precious metals. Locally it is written 匁. One momme equals 3.75 grams, or 0.12057 troy ounces, which at today's silver spot price works out to — KRW.
Where it is used. Japanese jewellers and pearl dealers quote per momme, and it is the unit behind many antique Japanese silver weights. The unit is the trading standard in Japan.
Pricing conventions. Japanese bullion dealers publish tax-inclusive yen prices per gram, so a momme quote is usually a conversion rather than the headline rate. Silver is bulkier per unit of value, so quotes in small traditional units are usually a conversion, while real trade happens in kilogram and 1 000 oz bars.
Good to know. One momme equals one tenth of a Taiwanese tael and matches the Korean don exactly.

Buying Silver in South Korea: local market, taxes and premiums
At the live price shown above per momme, the price you see here is the international XAG spot price converted into South Korean Won. Physical buyers in South Korea pay that reference plus a premium, and local trading is concentrated around Seoul's Jongno gold district and the KRX Gold Market. Buyers there generally watch the KRX gold price in won per gram as the day's reference.
Taxes and duties. Silver, platinum and palladium carry 10% VAT in retail form with no equivalent tax-free exchange route. Silver is bulkier and cheaper per unit, so shipping, storage and consumption taxes matter far more to the final price than they do for gold. That is why the shop price of silver in KRW can sit noticeably above the spot value of the same momme of metal.
How people usually buy. The common routes in South Korea are KRX Gold Market accounts, bank gold banking accounts, Jongno wholesale jewellers and online dealers. The products most often quoted locally include 3.75 g don units, 100 g and 1 kg bars, 24K gift coins.
Local conventions. Korean gold is traded in don (돈), a 3.75 g unit used for baby-gift rings and traditional jewellery, alongside gram-based bars. Before you buy, compare the dealer's asking price per momme with the live silver price above, and check the buy-back spread the same dealer offers — that round-trip cost matters more than a small difference in the headline KRW quote.
