What is a Tael (Taiwan)? Silver weight, conversions and local use
Definition. The Taiwanese tael is 37.5 grams, a metric rounding of the old Chinese tael, and the standard unit in Taiwanese gold shops. Locally it is written 台兩. One tael (taiwan) equals 37.5 grams, or 1.20565 troy ounces, which at today's silver spot price works out to — NOK.
Where it is used. Bank of Taiwan gold passbooks quote per gram, but jewellery and gift bars — especially at weddings and births — are counted in taels. The unit is the trading standard in Taiwan.
Pricing conventions. Taiwanese shops usually price 9999 gold per tael with a fixed workmanship charge and publish a separate buy-back rate that is a few percent below the selling rate. Silver is bulkier per unit of value, so quotes in small traditional units are usually a conversion, while real trade happens in kilogram and 1 000 oz bars.
Good to know. One Taiwanese tael is divided into ten 錢 (qian) of 3.75 g each, which is the same weight as the Japanese momme and the Korean don.

Buying Silver in Norway: local market, taxes and premiums
At the live price shown above per tael (taiwan), the price you see here is the international XAG spot price converted into Norwegian Krone. Physical buyers in Norway pay that reference plus a premium, and local trading is concentrated around Oslo, with dealers importing from continental Europe. Buyers there generally watch the LBMA price converted at the Norges Bank daily rate as the day's reference.
Taxes and duties. Silver, platinum and palladium carry 25% VAT, so most Norwegian silver investors buy stored metal abroad. Silver is bulkier and cheaper per unit, so shipping, storage and consumption taxes matter far more to the final price than they do for gold. That is why the shop price of silver in NOK can sit noticeably above the spot value of the same tael (taiwan) of metal.
How people usually buy. The common routes in Norway are Norwegian bullion dealers, European online dealers with insured shipping, bank deposit boxes and ETCs. The products most often quoted locally include 1 oz bullion coins, 100 g bars, vaulted allocated grams.
Local conventions. Because Norway is outside the EU customs union, imports need customs declaration even when the metal itself is VAT-free. Before you buy, compare the dealer's asking price per tael (taiwan) with the live silver price above, and check the buy-back spread the same dealer offers — that round-trip cost matters more than a small difference in the headline NOK quote.
