What is a Tola? Silver weight, conversions and local use
Definition. The tola (11.6638 g) is the traditional South Asian unit for gold and remains the standard quote in Indian and Gulf jewellery shops. Locally it is written तोला. One tola equals 11.6638 grams, or 0.37500 troy ounces, which at today's silver spot price works out to — SEK.
Where it is used. Ten-tola bars ('TT bars', 116.64 g) are the classic Dubai-to-India trade format, and wedding jewellery is still ordered by the tola. The unit is the trading standard in India, Pakistan, Nepal and the Gulf.
Pricing conventions. Indian shops quote a tola rate for 22K (0.916) rather than pure metal, then add making charges of 8–25%. Gulf shops quote 24K per tola or per gram and charge a smaller fixed making fee. Silver is bulkier per unit of value, so quotes in small traditional units are usually a conversion, while real trade happens in kilogram and 1 000 oz bars.
Good to know. The tola was once the weight of a British India silver rupee, which is why the unit is tied so closely to jewellery and savings culture.

Buying Silver in Sweden: local market, taxes and premiums
At the live price shown above per tola, the price you see here is the international XAG spot price converted into Swedish Krona. Physical buyers in Sweden pay that reference plus a premium, and local trading is concentrated around Stockholm and the Nordic online dealer network. Buyers there generally watch the LBMA price converted at the Riksbank rate as the day's reference.
Taxes and duties. Silver, platinum and palladium carry 25% Swedish VAT, one of the highest rates in Europe, which widens silver premiums sharply. Silver is bulkier and cheaper per unit, so shipping, storage and consumption taxes matter far more to the final price than they do for gold. That is why the shop price of silver in SEK can sit noticeably above the spot value of the same tola of metal.
How people usually buy. The common routes in Sweden are Liberty Silver and other Nordic dealers, bank safe-deposit plus dealer purchase, online dealers and ETCs on Nasdaq Stockholm. The products most often quoted locally include 1 oz Philharmonic and Krugerrand, 100 g bars, Swedish historical coins.
Local conventions. Nordic buyers often store silver in Estonian or Swiss bonded vaults to avoid paying VAT on delivery. Before you buy, compare the dealer's asking price per tola with the live silver price above, and check the buy-back spread the same dealer offers — that round-trip cost matters more than a small difference in the headline SEK quote.
