What is a Kilogram? Gold weight, conversions and local use
Definition. The kilogram bar is the workhorse of the Asian wholesale market and the deliverable size on the Shanghai Gold Exchange. One kilogram equals 1000 grams, or 32.15075 troy ounces, which at today's gold spot price works out to — SGD.
Where it is used. Refiners, banks and large dealers move metal in 1 kg bars; for silver the standard wholesale unit is a 1 000 oz or 30 kg bar. The unit is the trading standard in wholesale and institutional trade.
Pricing conventions. Kilogram pricing shows the smallest premium of any retail-accessible size, which is why dealers quote it when comparing buy-back offers or valuing an entire holding. Gold is the metal most often traded in these traditional units, because jewellery and savings demand kept the old weights alive long after industry went metric.
Good to know. A kilogram equals 32.1507 troy ounces — not 32, a difference worth several hundred currency units at today's gold price.
